House Manager Adam Schiff on Sunday reacted to an earlier tweet from President Donald Trump which was heavily critical of the California Democrat’s involvement in the impeachment trial.
It started when Trump tweeted, “Shifty Adam Schiff is a CORRUPT POLITICIAN, and probably a very sick man. He has not paid the price, yet, for what he has done to our Country!.”
The president’s tweet cause immediate outrage by Democrats and Schiff supporters, who began to claim that the tweet was intended as a sort of “threat.”
Schiff responded to the tweet on ABC’s This Week with host Chuck Todd.
Schiff said, “I made the argument that it’s going to require moral courage to stand up to this president. And this is a wrathful and vindictive president. I don’t think there’s any doubt about it. If you think there is, look at the president’s tweets about me today, saying that I should pay a price.”
Host Chuck Todd asked, “Do you take that as a threat?”
Schiff said, “I think it’s intended to be. But look, it is going to be very difficult for some of these senators to stand up to this president. It really is. There’s just no question about it. And I want to acknowledge that. And I don’t want to acknowledge it in a way that is offensive to them. But I do want to speak candidly about it.”
The president has hammered Schiff and many of his fellow Democratic colleagues in recent weeks, mostly with regard to the ongoing impeachment inquiry and Senate trial. Democrats opened up the Senate trial with several days of arguments in an attempt to convince the upper chamber that Trump is guilty of two articles of impeachment and should be removed from the White House.
Trump’s legal defense team had their chance to counter those arguments beginning on Saturday, apparently with so much success that even a CNN political analyst claimed that Trump and Republicans were now “winning” the impeachment trial.
