U.S. Attorney General William Barr responded recently to an interview given by disgraced, former FBI director James Comey in which he insisted that the investigation known as “Crossfire Hurricane” — which was the name for the FBI counterintelligence investigation of the Trump campaign — was “seven layers” below him at the time it was happening.
According to The Daily Caller, Barr slammed Comey’s attempt to downplay his role in the scandalous FBI investigation during an appearance on Fox News Sunday.
“The idea that this was seven layers below him is simply not true,” Barr said.
Barr doubled down, implying that not only was Comey well aware of the controversial investigation, he knew exactly who was running it.
“I think that one of the problems with what happened was precisely that they pulled the investigation up to the executive floors, and it was run and birddogged by a very small group of very high level officials,” Barr claimed during his interview.
Comments on the situation from Barr and Comey came on the heels of an Inspector General’s report which stated that there were “‘significant inaccuracies’ in the FBI’s applications for surveillance orders against former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.”
The report also claimed that Comey was involved in the lead-up to start Crossfire Hurricane and even reviewed FISA application for the operation.
While Comey eventually admitted that he was in the “wrong” by having previously claimed that the FBI didn’t commit any mistakes in the process, he also did his best to downplay the entire debacle, saying that FBI “sloppiness” was a contributing factor.
Barr countered Comey’s attempt to make it sound like no big deal and reminded him that the buck stops with the leaders at the top.
“I think leaders have to own their decisions and are fair game if they make bad decisions,” Barr said.
