Michael Bloomberg has very little faith in his Democratic competitors looking to take down President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.
So little faith, in fact, that he claims that the president would “eat them up,” which is why he decided to jump into the race to begin with.
“I watched [Trump] and I said, ‘we just can’t have another four years of this,’” Bloomberg said in an interview with CBS’s Gayle King. “Then I watched all the candidates, and I just thought to myself, ‘Donald Trump would eat them up.’”
King, surprised, asked, “You think all the candidates who are running today, he would eat them up?”
“Let me rephrase it,” Bloomberg responded. “I think that I would do the best job of competing with him and beating him.”
The 77-year-old Bloomberg has taken a similar approach to Trump when it comes to campaign funding, The candidate said he’s willing to put up his billions of dollars of wealth on the line to compete for the Democratic nomination. However, he’s gotten a great deal of pushback from his fellow competitors, with Sen. Elizabeth Warren saying that elections should not “be for sale.”
“I’m not buying any more — I’m doing exactly the same thing they’re doing, except that I am using my own money,” Bloomberg noted later in the interview. “They’re using somebody else’s money, and those other people expect something from them. Nobody gives you money if they don’t expect something, and I don’t want to be bought.”
