Opinion editorial by William Addison.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has put herself in quite the bind within the last month.
Over two weeks ago, she led a hyper-partisan impeachment vote against President Donald Trump that passed the House of Representatives and is still withholding — unconstitutionally — the articles of impeachment that were approved.
But now, after Trump delivers a pinpoint drone strike eliminating top Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani, she veers off on a campaign to follow the Constitution with regard to how war and military operations are conducted.
Do as I say, not as I do.
She admonished Trump’s decisive strike in a statement, saying it was “provocative and disproportionate,” along with suggesting that the strike was illegal and constitutes a war crime. Interestingly enough, she’s reaming Trump for a single military action against Iran when former President Barack Obama conducted over 2,800 military operations (bombing runs, airstrikes, etc.) against Iraq and Syria.
And — you guessed it — there wasn’t congressional approval for any of Obama’s military actions, per the Washington Times.
So not only does she violate the Constitution and then turn around to protect it, but she even cherry-picks when she wants to protect the Constitution.
That said, Pelosi’s time may be running out soon with regard to her unprecedented impeachment stall.
According to Bloomberg, the White House legal team is looking to challenge the idea that Trump even has been impeached in the wake of Pelosi’s delay.
“The White House legal theory, according to a person familiar with the legal review, is that if Trump has been officially impeached, the U.S. Senate should already have jurisdiction,” Bloomberg reported. “Backers of the theory would argue that the clause of the U.S. Constitution that gives the Senate ‘the sole Power to try all Impeachments; indicates that the impeachment isn’t formalized until the House reported the charges to the upper chamber.”
There’s no telling when Pelosi will look to release the impeachment articles, but the longer she waits, the worse it will get.
