Freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar is on the hot-seat.
Multiple federal agencies have reportedly tasked investigators with digging around to see if the Minnesota congresswoman has committed as many as six alleged crimes.
These charges include the following: eight instances of perjury, immigration fraud, marriage fraud, tax fraud, federal student loan fraud, and even bigamy.
According to reports by TheBlaze last October, “the Department of Justice had assigned an FBI Special Agent in Charge, or SAC, to review Rep. Ilhan Omar’s apparent, astonishing spree of felonies from 2009 to 2017.”
They added that the “FBI SAC stated that the wide range of criminal activity suggested by the evidence against Rep. Omar may lead the FBI to expand the review to other federal departments.”
And expand the review, they have.
Since October, TheBlaze is now reporting that investigators from both the Department of Education and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have joined the FBI to get to the bottom of the matter.
Most of the alleged criminal activity stems from her 2009 marriage to a British citizen, which the Department of Education inspector general claimed may have been “an attempt to facilitate federal student loan fraud, or other fraud involving higher education,” per the Daily Wire.
Omar’s complete marriage history is complicated — leaving room for the bigamy charge.
According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, she married Ahmed Hirsi in 2002 in a “faith tradition,” but divorced him later in 2008. The next year, she married British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in both a “faith tradition” and legal marriage. While she divorced from him in the “faith tradition” in 2011, she remained legally married to him until 2017.
The IRS issues come up in 2014 and 2015, when she filed jointly with Hirsi, despite having divorced him several years prior and still being legally married to Elmi.
Before being elected to congress in 2017, Omar legally divorced Elmi and legally married Hirshi.
It is currently unknown how long the investigation may go on for, along with what the consequences would be should Omar be convicted of any of the alleged crimes.
