Update: Key GOP Senator Will Vote NO On Witnesses, Trump Could Be Acquitted By The Weekend

As the country waited to find out what a small group of Republican senators would decided with regard to whether or not they would support the call for witnesses in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, late-breaking reports on Thursday night indicated that at least two will break with the GOP and side with Democrats on the issue.

However, without the four total Republican swings votes required to pass the simple majority for the witness vote for Democrats, it appears as if the idea of witnesses is no longer a possibility.

The Hill also reported that a key swing vote, GOP Sen. Lamar Alexander, has decided to not break with Republicans and will not be voting in favor of calling witnesses in Friday’s blanket up-or-down vote.

Because Alexander’s decision to vote against witnesses, without another Republican on their side, it appears as if Democrats will not be able to muster the four extra votes needed to have witnesses called for the impeachment trial, signaling a close end to the trial altogether.

According to The Hill, Sen. Susan Collins of Maine became the first Republican to declare that she will, in fact, side with Democrats and vote to call witnesses and request further documents in the impeachment trial. Collins has reported that she will vote yes for witnesses in a vote that’s expected to take place on Friday.

“I believe hearing from certain witnesses would give each side the opportunity to more fully and fairly make their case, resolve any ambiguities, and provide additional clarity. Therefore, I will vote in support of the motion to allow witnesses and documents to be subpoenaed,” Collins said on Thursday night after the trial came to a close for the day.

Sen. Mitt Romney, who has also indicated that he would call for witnesses, reportedly confirmed that he will also side with Democrats on the matter.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, the fourth GOP senator who would have allowed Democrats to successfully pass the witness vote, has yet to confirm which way she’ll be voting.
